The Symptoms of a Soul in Crisis

After seeing all his relatives and friends standing ready on the battlefield, what happened to Arjun next is described by Vedavyasa with extraordinary psychological precision.

Bhagavad Gita 1.28–29

What Arjun described was a physical collapse, the body giving way before the mind had found words for what it was feeling.

His limbs weakened, his mouth went dry, and his body trembled. Every hair on his skin bristled. Gandiva, the invincible bow that had never failed him, slipped from his grasp. His skin burned, his thoughts blurred, and he could no longer remain standing.

The body always speaks before the mind finds words. And Arjun’s body was saying, with absolute clarity, what his intellect had not yet formed into language — I cannot do this.

This was the first genuine spiritual crisis of a great soul, the moment when everything a man has been trained to do collides with everything he is.

He collapsed into his seat on the chariot. His bow lay fallen beside him and his eyes filled.

In that silence, between two armies, between duty and love, between action and bewilderment, he turned to Shri Krishna, and asked the question that would change everything.
